Last week’s most-watched cable TV show was the MTV VMAs (Video Music Awards). Did you happen to catch it? If not, here’s a list of the 5-biggest jaw-droppers of the night. Even if you didn’t watch it, chances are your students did. Or they saw the pictures online. Or they watched clips on YouTube or Or they’ve got a replay set to record on your DVR.

You may absolutely despise the music, TV shows, or movies your kids watch, but it’s worth your time to check them out. For instance, the VMAs are notorious for outrageous behavior. It’s a night when music and movie stars vie for the wildest moment of the night. They try to have the craziest outfit and let fly with whatever they want to say. In short, the artists, presenters, and attendees use this night to project the image they want to have. Justin Bieber wants to be the edgy cool guy. Lady Gaga wants to be unpredictable. Katy Perry wants to be Lady Gaga. And they all want our teenagers to spend money on them.

Take some time and talk to your students about the media they interact with. Learn something about the artists they admire. Know the content of the movie they saw over the weekend and talk to them about it. Help your student understand and discern what Christians can redeem or reject, if need be. Mark Driscoll wrote a great piece on how Christians can interact with culture here. To help get you started, here are lists of the top songs, TV shows, and movies this week. I hope it helps open some doors to talk about culture with your students.
